Unlike 'Newsies,' no talk of Broadway for Disney's 'Aladdin'
Lots of buzz about Disney’s “Newsies” having a successful regional premiere and quite likely eventually ending up on Broadway .
No such buzz surrounded another Disney regional premiere this summer. A staged version of the 1992 animated film “Aladdin” played for a month at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater.
I saw it while on a West Coast vacation, and there’s a reason it doesn’t have the “Newsies” buzz: Broadway-ready, it’s not.
To be fair, Disney’s plan has never been to put the show on Broadway; the company wants to license it to other regional theaters. And maybe that explains why the show was so very curiously understaged: an effort was being made to present it with resources a small theater might have.
But let’s face it, a Disney show for kids is no time to go for “subtle” — especially when “Aladdin” is all about magic. The whole story hinges on a magic genie and magical wishes.
