Big time stars, upcoming and long-standing, meet in this week's big dramatic release, "The Ides of March." George Clooney and Ryan Gosling star in this political thriller.
So let's look at the best political movies. It's a wide avenue and I drew some lines. I'm not including documentaries, biopics, or dramas based on true-life events with real characters. This unfortunately excludes two stellar films, "All the President's Men" and "Charlie Wilson's War"; and three very good movies, "JFK," "Nixon" and "The War Room." It also had to be a political office of a public nature, so the dark excellence of "Election" is not included here.
There are some honorable mentions: "Bob Roberts," "Dave," "Dick," "The Great McGinty," The Last Hurrah," "Power," "Primary Colors" and "Seven Days in May." But now, on with the show:
10. Being There (1979): Most like this film more than I do, though I think Peter Sellers' performance deserved an Oscar. Sellers plays a dim-witted gardener whose simple-minded statements are mistaken for profundity by D.C. power players. Great performances, decent movie.
