What should I look for when watching the 1979 film "Apocalypse Now"?

I've seen the Hurt Locker however I have not seen Apocalypse Now because one of my parents had the movie and wouldn't let me watch it when I was little...so is it that gruesome?


I would call it strange and gruesome at times but not any thing a modern teen can't handle. I think there were scenes of chopped off heads on bamboo poles and it is a violent movie, but just because one parent years ago said no doesn't mean that prohibition
