Reno orchestra salutes Nevada
25.09.11
The Reno Philharmonic, under the direction of Laura Jackson, begins its new "Master Classics" season next Sunday and Oct. 4 with "Welcome Home," a concert celebrating the music of Nevada in particular and the country as a whole.
The best-known piece on the program is Antonín Dvorák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," certainly one of the most beloved pieces ever written by Dvorák to encourage young composers to find their distinctive musical voice.
While doing so, he wrote his own tribute to this country, combining American Indian and African American inspirations with music that captures the expansiveness of the United States.
Fitting the spirit of Dvorák's mission, a young composer's work will also be presented: "Desert Garden," a premiere by Sean Shepherd, whose "Silvery Rills" had its first performance presented by the Reno Philharmonic in February.
Shepherd is a Reno native and has been commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Claremont Trio. He is the Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow of the Cleveland Orchestra and the first composer-in-residence at the Reno Philharmonic.
