New MOD: No Escape (1953) — But You'll Want To
Trying not to drop a plot spoiler at the very start of a review, a reviewer probably shouldn’t begin with this blurb off the back of No Escape ’s DVD packaging: “An innocent couple, seeking to clear themselves of a homicide charge discover that a jealous enraged detective is the murderer.” Well…um…okay…now that we know who done it, why should we watch No Escape ?
Maybe we’d watch it for outstanding performances from a stellar cast: Lew Ayres as the piano-playing, song-writing, drunk John Howard Tracy, Sonny Tufts as the murderous Detective Simon Shayne, and Marjorie Steele as the somewhat less than beautiful object of their affections, Pat Peterson. No, that can’t be it—these performances don’t actually sparkle. (Although Gertrude Michael does a great job with her few minutes on screen as Olga, the bad girl.)
