WC Fields of dreams
That's the focus of the inaugural W.C. Fields Comedy Film Festival, which mixes 13 of Fields' still-influential films and "shorts" with commentary by his grandson.
"Maybe a slide show too," said Ronald Fields, cautioning that he does a "wickedly poor" version of W.C.'s growly accent.
"If I can find them."
Fields and Tracy-based puppet-makers Dennis and Sharon Lancaster organized the festival that runs today through Sunday at Tracy's Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.
Fields, 62, who's written three books, produced an Emmy Award-winning TV documentary, crafted a stage musical and toured with a one-man show devoted to his granddad, hopes to expand this weekend's event into an annual festival of international film comedy.
"It'll take some perseverance," said Fields, a guardian of his grandfather's legacy (W.C. Fields Productions Inc.), along with his four siblings. "They have one in Porta Leona, Italy. It's no more accessible than Tracy."
