The film is dedicated to "the memory of those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom and democracy in Iran" in the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, in the resistance to the overthrow of Mossadegh in 1953 (as stated by the film) and during the Green Movement of 2009. It opens with a call to prayer, a woman clad in black on a rooftop, who then jumps. Her hair floats above her. "Now I'll have silence and nothing."
Munis (acted by Shabnam Tolouei) has been told by her domineering brother, Amir Khan (played by Essa Zahir), that if "you leave the house I will break your legs". She is nearly 30 and he wants to be rid of her by marrying her off. He is conservative, but she has a natural sense of justice, identification with the people and a desire for change. In her state of captivity, Munis reaches out by listening to the radio until Amir Khan interferes. She has no choice then, but to go out and seek public places where she can hear the news - these are spaces where few women tread.
