14.10.11
The top 10 scariest films of all time is not the easiest list in the world to prepare, because different people find different things scary.
There are some films, however, that almost everyone can agree - for the time and place during which they were produced - are among the scariest movies ever made.
What makes a horror flick truly scary? You can see that there are a number of films that are a bit older - but frankly, the more realistic the premise of the horror, the better the scare. Lots of special effects and pyro-technics, ugly makeup, and bizarre characters only make the unreal seem more fantastical, and the scary effect is lost.
Here are our top ten scariest films of all time, in no particular order.
Psycho (1960) - Madman Norman Bates, a conflicted mama's boy who simply could not find a way to cope without dragging his dead mother's body into the mix, had people locking their bathroom doors even in their own homes! Actor Anthony Perkins, who played the role of Bates, said he would not let his children watch the movie. There were sequels made, but as scary as they were, none ever compared to the original.
