Hear Latin Jazz at Temple

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society presents Grammy-winning Latin jazz flutist Dave Valentin in concert with the Heart of Carolina Jazz orchestra, directed by Gregg Gelb, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Temple Theatre in Sanford.

Dave Valentin is of Puerto Rican descent and lives in Bronx, N.Y. He first learned Latin percussion when he was a child, and won an audition in percussion to the N.Y. School of Music and Arts. He also studied flute and saxophone, and his flute teacher, Hubert Laws, suggested that he not double on percussion or saxophone because of his attractive sound on the flute.

In 1977, he made his recording debut with Ricardo Marrero's group, and he appeared also on a Noel Pointer album. Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, Valentin was the first artist signed to GRP, and he has been a popular attraction ever since.

Valentin has recorded more than 15 albums, combining the influence of pop, R&B and Brazilian music with Latin and smooth jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. In 2000, he appeared in the documentary film "Calle 54," performing with Tito Puente. He toured with El Negro and MioSotis. Since the mid-2000s, Valentin has been signed to Highnote Records. In addition to winning the Latin Jazz Grammy in 2002 he has been nominated many other times.
