I think most westerners aren't that familiar with Armenians for obvious reasons. Armenia was until recently a part of Soviet Union and isolated behind the so called "Iron Curtain", where Soviet Republics where obliged not to involve themselves with the capitalist world. That's why a lot of Armenians are still not so well known in the western world. But to more culturally intellectual people names like Ivan Aivazovsky and Sergei Parajanov are not unfamiliar. Also I’d like to say that within Soviet Union tons of Armenians became famous as war heroes, innovators, inventers, artists or tv personalities. To name a few Anastas Mikoyan (First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union, the second most important man of USSR after Stalin), Artem Mikoyan (inventor of the famous Russian MiG fighter jet), Ivan Bagramian (Marshal of USSR), Irina Allegrova (pop singer, known as Queen of Russian pop), Philipp Kirkorov (singer, known as King of Russian pop),
