Sox, Cubs talk compensation for Theo

Compensation to the Red Sox will come in one of two forms: cash or a player, likely a minor league prospect. If the Sox were to procure a major leaguer in exchange for Epstein, it would break with Major League Baseball’s precedent for the movement of under-contract executives from one team to another.
The Red Sox were prepared to swap Double-A third baseman Kevin Youkilis [ stats ] for Beane in 2002. Last month, the Chicago White Sox received two of the Florida Marlins’ top five prospects in exchange for letting manager Ozzie Guillen out of his contract to join the team.
A source with knowledge of the negotiations told the Herald this week that the Red Sox will be looking for “something real” as compensation for Epstein, who has a year left on his contract with the Sox. Cherington may target lefty-hitting outfielder Brett Jackson, but it is believed the Cubs won’t have to lose their top prospect, who is slated to be ready for the majors next season.
