This week, the BFI London Film Festival will be showing two very different music films. One, Lawrence Of Belgravia , is a low-budget documentary about the near-penniless existence of the former Felt and Denim frontman, Lawrence. The other is the English language debut of feted Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, This Must Be The Place , a cross-continents, big budget tale of a millionaire rock star starring Sean Penn and Frances McDormand .

Yet, despite their differences, both films seem to be addressing a similar theme, namely, the historical redundancy of the rock star in the 21st Century. I first saw part of Paul Kelly's Lawrence doc back in November 2008 at the Cinema 2 screening room in the Barbican. Concerning the eternally deferred ascent to fame of the former Felt and Denim frontman (his surname, Hayward, long excised), Lawrence Of Belgravia was then a fag-scorched 20-minute work-in-progress offering a haunting glimpse into a rock life lived forever upstage from the main action.
