Listen: The Big Interview: Chantal Kreviazuk, from darkness to light
23.09.11
Chantal Kreviazuk nearly died when she was 20, but the memory of that moment informs every minute of her life, 17 years later.
“It was actually this very day, back in 1994, when it happened,” she begins, on the afternoon we did this interview. “I was in Florence, the summer before I was supposed to start college, riding on a moped down this street.”
She later found out there was a motorcycle driver at the other end of the street, a man with a history of violent behaviour, who had been fighting with the police.
“His headlight was out and they told him he’d have to walk it home. Instead he jumped on his bike and drove it full speed down the block, right into me.
“When I woke up in the ambulance, I asked the paramedic if I was going to die. He said no and that’s when the long journey of healing began.”
We all know there’s a happy ending. A long and successful career as a singer-songwriter followed and she’ll be helping to celebrate Canada’s Walk of Fame Festival with a concert at Massey Hall on Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.
