Nutcracker Suite - Fantasia 1940
As explained in a featurette that accompanies "Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition," the box-office performances of "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" (both 1940) were disappointing, especially considering the generous resources Disney invested in those projects.
By contrast, the team behind "Dumbo" (1941) was leaner and meaner, the story simpler. The film was hailed by critics as a return to form for Disney. (This was because, following the lofty ambitions of "Fantasia," the unabashedly cartoony "Dumbo" hearkened to Disney's beloved "Silly Symphony" shorts of the previous decade.) And the film's emotional themes, which celebrated individuality and motherly love, resonated with audiences.
Plot: A baby elephant is born — well, delivered by a stork — into a circus. He's a cute little fellow, but his giant ears draw ridicule. In defending her baby, Mrs. Jumbo is branded a "mad elephant" and segregated in a cage. Timothy Q. Mouse befriends Dumbo and becomes his de facto agent. After encountering a group of crows who first mock, and then mentor, Dumbo, the elephant discovers he can fly using his ears, and he becomes the main attraction of the circus.
