Riverside dancer to perform at Museum of Contemporary Art

Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art is premiering a new dance work featuring Riverside director/choreographer/performer Julia Rhoads at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 to 29 and Nov. 3, 5 and 6, at 220 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago.

“The Better Half,” a new dance theater work by Lucky Plush Productions, is a contemporary spin-off of Gaslight — the 1944 classic noir film where Ingrid Bergman plays a woman slowly driven mad by her conniving husband. The performance playfully captures the claustrophobia, escapism, and resilience in domestic relationships.

The play features performers from Chicago-based Lucky Plush Productions and 500 Clown, the acclaimed physical theater company.

Rhoads is choreographer and founding artistic director of Lucky Plush Productions. Her independent work has been commissioned by national dance companies and she has choreographed for many theater, performance and film companies.

Rhoads was a company member of the San Francisco Ballet, and a collaborating ensemble member of XSIGHT! Performance Group. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Northwestern University and an master’s degree from the School of the Art Institute Chicago, and she is currently a part-time faculty member in the theater department at Columbia College Chicago.

Theatre Review: Journey provides the thrill in Oyster Mill's 'Angel Street'
Theatre Review: Journey provides the thrill in Oyster Mill's 'Angel Street' If that plot sounds familiar, it's because this Victorian era mystery now onstage at Oyster Mill Playhouse is better known to most as "Gaslight," a famous 1944 film version starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman and a quite young Angela Lansbury.

Hovdey: Book paints vivid picture of horse at war
Perhaps I'm being unfair to 1944. There were only five nominated movies back then, compared to nine for 2011, and two of them – “Gaslight” and “Double Indemnity” – were gloriously nasty pieces of work, featuring the psychological torture of Ingrid

Review: Despite Slow Start, 'Sound Mind' a Worthwhile Thriller
Burton turns out to be the kind of psychological thriller that Alfred Hitchcock used to enjoy — and, in fact, Burton isn't even shy about tossing out some of his influences, mentioning both Hitchcock and the 1944 classic "Gaslight" during the show.

Time goes by and Bogart is still a box-office hit
Hollywood's old attitude to preservation was underlined when (at least myth has it) MGM tried to have the British film version of Gaslight (1940) destroyed so that it wouldn't get in the way of their 1944 US remake. One glaring irony is that the
