'Get Carter,' 'MST3K,' 'Grandview, USA' DVD reviews

Starring Michael Caine as steely-eyed gangster Jack Carter has become slightly dated.
Blame this, not on the film's groovy early-'70s setting, but its somewhat squeamish attitude toward porn, which seems quaint in the age of "sexting" and Skype sex.
This is hardly a fatal blow to "Get Carter," which remains gritty and engrossing.
You root for Caine's Carter, even though he is a terrible person doing terrible things. After all, he sincerely cares about his niece (Petra Markham) — or is she his daughter? And if she throws a drink in your face at her presumed father's wake, Carter will slip some dough in your pocket for the cleaners.
A confident man who wears spiffy suits, Carter is also quite the Don Juan. In the short time he spends in Newcastle, he beds the proprietor (Rosemarie Dunham) of a bed and breakfast — she's no spring chicken, but looks good walking up the stairs — and a local thug's convertible-driving mistress (Geraldine Moffat). As if that isn't enough activity, Carter has phone sex with his London boss' wife (Britt Ekland).
