Rock Hudson vs. Mickey Simpson In this pivotal scene from George Stevens' sweeping, Texas-sized epic about the Lonestar state, Bick Bennedict ...
The Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth fought for blacks to enjoy the same rights and freedoms as whites in the Deep South during segregation: eating at a lunch counter; sitting where they wished on public buses; receiving an equal, adequate public education.
For that, Shuttlesworth was beaten, bloodied and bombed. He was arrested dozens of times.
It's amazing that this stalwart of Birmingham, Ala., successfully dodged assassination in his relentless pursuit of human rights. His city, after all, had earned the sinister nickname "Bombingham."
Regrettably, the passing of the fiery orator last week at age 89 was overshadowed by the death the same day of Steve Jobs, the Apple innovator who revolutionized personal technology and mobile gizmos. (Jobs was front-page news everywhere - including The Pilot - while Shuttlesworth's obit was consigned inside.)
It's important, however, to acknowledge Shuttlesworth's critical place in U.S. history - and how he revolutionized society, too.
