FOR more than 40 years platoons of police had tried to solve what the Echo had called “the mystery of the missing chorus girl”.
But in the first week of November 1961, Mamie Stuart was forgotten by all but family and her few surviving friends. For the police she was simply a few yellowing sheets of paper in a dusty file. For the Echo a few faded photographs in a drawer of the library. And that’s how things might have stayed – until three adventurous young Bishopston boys decided to take a look at a disused old lead mine one afternoon.
Fifty years ago this week, Graham Jones, John Gerke and Chris MacNamara climbed down the shaft of the mine at Brandy Cove on the Gower Coast. What they found there brought the sensational Echo headline the following day, GOWER SKELETON MIGHT BE MAMIE. It was, we announced, “a vital clue to the chorus girl who vanished”.
That dusty police envelope was reopened. The Echo library hurriedly searched for a photograph of Mamie on her wedding day – with her husband George Shotton (the picture that appears on this page). Enthralled readers were whisked back to the end of the Great War.
