Moira de Swardt: Two men alone in a cell after lights out – a B grade movie scenario or a tender love story?
“The Kiss of the Spider Woman” was written first as a novel, then scripted as a play, by Manuel Puig in the political turmoil of Latin America in the seventies. The play deals with two prisoners, Valentin (Garth Collins) and Luis Molina (Brian Webber). The former is a leftist revolutionary, a social outcast in time and place, and the latter imprisoned for “indecency”, a sexual outcast in the same time and place. The offenses are deliberately vague. What oppressive regime needs a good reason to imprison someone?
The staging is the simple cell and the set is very effective. The design is by Wilhelm Disbergen and the set was manufactured by Yves La Garrique. The scene painter was Marsha Holtzhausen. The lighting was very gentle on the audience, for which I was grateful. I was afraid that much of it would take place
