DePeterse: Dance into autumn with 'Wild Rumpus'
01.10.11
Now, 31 years later, we've had 100 days of temperatures in the 90s.
That's why I've been looking for any signs of autumn, any harbingers of cooler weather. Long pants on the UPS driver. Those knobby little inedible squash at the grocery store. A day dawning cool and fresh, with dog barks and crow calls ringing out with crisp distinctness. Sunrises that don't wilt all your hope.
And if September didn't kill us, fall weather will revive us. The most delicious month of the year has arrived: sweet October. I admit I love the first crocus in the frost and the fertile air of a March morning, but I will always prefer the subtle delights of fall to springtime's showy pinks and greens. As lovely as a dogwood is in bloom, what compares to its curled russet glory in October?
October. Corn mazes and apple orchards. The comforting pressure of blankets. The spicy odor floating from the blossoms hiding in the silverberry bushes. In the cool air, the bite of wood smoke and burning leaves. Chrysanthemums awakened by the shortened days. And, best of all, Halloween!
