'North by Northwest' to get hearts pounding at Paramount
A suited man stands at a deserted crossroads, with dusty roads and flat blue skies extending in every direction.
Off in the distance, he notices a crop-dusting biplane drifting lazily through the air. Only it's not covering any crops. It's coming his way, the roar of its engine getting progressively louder.
We see the man's expression shift into a grimace as the plane flies lower and lower, still barreling right at him. At the last moment, he drops into the dirt, as the plane roars just overhead. He gets up, only to realize that the plane is reeling around to make another pass. And this time, a gunner is taking aim at him from the cockpit.
It's one of the most iconic action scenes in movie history, and it cuts to the core anxieties at the heart of Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 thriller, "North by Northwest." The film screens this Friday and Saturday at the Paramount Theatre as part of the venue's classic film series.
"The idea of the whole film is that this man is trapped alone," said Robert Holladay, the Paramount's film director. "There's no one he can trust."
