Texas vs. Oklahoma offers intrigue on and off field
07.10.11
This week, in advance of the big Red River Realignment Rivalry, the specter of conference expansion continues to hang over the Big 12. So Oklahoma reporters sought out David Boren, the OU president, for a comment.
And where was Boren? Finessing the state legislature for more funds? Addressing the faculty senate? Schmoozing rich-oilman alums?
Uh, no. They caught him ... at football practice.
"We'll be fine either way," Boren said, referring to Missouri's impending decision on bolting for the SEC.
Meanwhile, Mack Brown, the Texas coach, spoke for a lot of folks early this week, when asked about realignment.
"I'm a little realignment-worn-out," he said.
The Texas-Oklahoma collision (9 a.m. PDT Saturday) this year takes on the added intrigue of the two schools' recent sparks over their conference futures. For now, they've made nice, but I wouldn't bet on that goodwill being a deep oil field.
As for the game, No. 11 Texas' resurgence has mirrored its improved running game. But Oklahoma has Landry Jones, a Heisman threat. He throws to Ryan Broyles, who has 304 career receptions, 13 shy of the NCAA career-record holder.
