Kermit Miller has always been fit.
He began working with weights when he was just 14. In college, he was a good enough boxer to be offered a professional contract.
Today, at 72, Miller is still fit, probably more fit than many men half a century younger.
Each morning, hot or cold, fair or foul, he drives from his home on Jacksonville’s Westside into town, usually to the Cedar Hills Shopping Center.
Then he sets off on a run that takes him through Lake Shore to Ortega on a route that winds back to Cedar Hills. Since February, he’s been running 14 to 16 miles a day.
About four times a week, he follows his run with a workout at a gym. He lifts weights and does a set of 200 pushups.
Since he retired eight years ago, he has had plenty of time to work out. But even during the previous 32 years, while working as an administrator for what is now Florida State College at Jacksonville, Miller ran regularly. Just not as far.
He studied mathematics as an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi, spent time as a high school math teacher and a high school principal, and earned a doctorate in administration from Ole Miss.
