In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000.
In 2012, Relay For Life will take place in more than 4,900 communities, including Henderson. It will take place locally on June 1 at North Middle School.
But local plans for the event are already under way.
The American Cancer Society will host its annual Relay For Life kick-off on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the new Independence Bank on 76 S. Green Street.
The committee invites anyone who is interested in forming a team for the 17th annual Relay For Life of Henderson County to attend. Registration is half-off the regular price for teams who sign up at kick-off.
The Relay For Life kick-off is an opportunity for families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies and businesses to learn more about the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life, and to find out how they can fight back against cancer by forming a team.
