MENIFEE: Director's work subject of free film series
06.10.11
A highly talented ---- yet somewhat underappreciated and
relatively unknown director ---- will be the focus of a series of
movies shown at Mt. San Jacinto College in Menifee.
Films of director Howard Hawks will be screened on the first
Friday of each month, October through December, at the college.
Hawks began his career in the silent era and worked his way up
through the age of television. He proved a durable and adaptable
producer of historical epics, war films, screwball comedies,
detective films and westerns.
Jim Davis, professor of history, film studies and the humanities
at the college, said the series is meant to honor Hawks' work and
offer an interesting, free event to the community.
"He is not a household name exactly, but I think he should be,"
Davis said of Hawks. "He is probably behind some of the finest
American films ever made."
Davis said Hawks was prolific in his field.
"He worked in so many types of films ---- comedies to war films
to westerns ---- he even made musicals," Davis said. "He was fairly
accomplished in all of these different areas."
