Insights into the reel world

Filmmaker Spike Lee, one of the few African-American directors to achieve mainstream success in Hollywood, on Friday offered some words of encouragement for Buffalo State College students seeking to follow in his footsteps.

The director of the Academy Award-nominated 1989 film "Do the Right Thing" even spent some private time with students in the college's five-year-old television and film arts program before addressing a general audience for a sold-out lecture in the Rockwell Hall auditorium.

"It's not a great time to be a young filmmaker," Lee said during his general lecture. "Yet, I don't want to discourage young people."

Commenting on the mindset of those in Hollywood with the power to bankroll and greenlight projects, Lee expressed concern that they tend to be far more interested in the bottom line than the quality of the product being released to the public.

"There are too many people in [powerful] positions who know nothing about cinema, and what makes it worse, they don't even love it. It's just a job, and that's disheartening," he said.
