Lane (pictured) has learnt something about that from one Jack White, who, with The White Stripes, was famed for recording chart-topping albums for the kind of budgets that wouldn't have paid for some big bands' catering expenses.
White heard another like mind at work when someone played him some songs by Lane, who grew up in Sydney but these days is based in Melbourne.
"Within a couple of days of my songs being passed on to him, Jack emailed me and asked me if I wanted to do something with him. I told him I was too busy," Lane says, laughing. She's joking of course.
Soon she was with White in his Nashville studio recording Ain't Hungry and My Man, released as a single on his Third Man Records label.
"I was just really lucky that he heard my music.
"We recorded two songs in six hours. He'd never heard them before or asked to hear demos; he trusted what I would bring along. I went in there, played him the songs and he said, 'Let's get to work'.
