Marjorie Zalewski, 1933-2011: Teacher was award-winning cook

Oct 16, 2011 (The Blade - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Marjorie Zalewski, a retired elementary teacher who with patience, culinary panache, and a dash of competitive spirit cooked and baked her way to a decade's worth of Ohio State Fair blue ribbons, died Friday in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Township. She was 78.

She learned she had melanoma about four years ago. Most recently, she underwent clinical trials at the University of Michigan cancer center, her husband, Chester, said.

Mrs. Zalewski of the Shoreland neighborhood of North Toledo had entries prepared for the 2011 state fair, but cancer treatment kept her away.

"She was heartbroken she couldn't go," said Judy Dieball, a former colleague and friend.

Instead, Mrs. Zalewski took her homemade goodies to Ann Arbor for the doctors and staff at the cancer center.
