Gordon Matthew Sumner se narodil 2. října 1951 v anglickém městečku Wallsend a vyrůstal v Newcastlu. Odmala hrál na klavír, sám se naučil na kytaru a po svých patnáctinách, k nimž dostal baskytaru, založil první kapelu. Během studií účinkoval v mnoha dalších skupinách a vystupoval v černožlutém svetru, čímž si vysloužil přezdívku "sting" (žihadlo).
Počátkem 70. let krátce vyučoval na základní škole angličtinu a tělocvik, hudba ho ale přivedla do Londýna, kde v roce 1977 s bubeníkem Stewartem Copelandem a kytaristou Henrim Padovanim založil skupinu The Police. V témže roce Padovaniho vystřídal Andy Summers a kapela, hrající v té době směs rocku a reggae, se brzy vyšvihla na přední příčky hitparád (hity z roku 1979 Roxanne či Message In A Bottle jsou populární dodnes) a získala několik platinových a zlatých desek v Británii i USA. V 80. letech se však Summers, Sting i Copeland vydali na sólové dráhy. V roce 2007 se znovu sešli ke společnému turné.
