What was so great about the 1963 film Tom Jones?

Picturesque, plenty of cleavage, but otherwise dull, not that humorous, and even boring.
What did anyone ever see in it?
Is it a generational humour gap?

I don't know either; I saw it years ago (I'm 52), and I didn't think it was all that good. However, I was only 8 or 9 at the time; since it won a LOT of awards, maybe it's time I revisited it, keeping the atmosphere of 1963 in mind :-)

The induction class includes Fred Angerman, Darrell Harding, Brian Herman, Ben Jones, the late Walter Malinchak, Tom Urbanik and Casper Voithofer.

Angerman

Before lettering three years as a wide receiver and kick returner at Wake Forest University, Angerman helped Monongahela High School win consecutive conference titles in 1964 and 1965. The all-state player won conference scoring titles his junior year when he compiled more than 2,100 rushing and receiving yards with 21 touchdowns. He also had a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys.

Harding

Symbolizing his hometown's nickname of the "Magic City," Harding finished his brilliant scholastic career at Charleroi High School in 1991 as the WPIAL's all-time career-leading rusher with 5,410 yards.
