Fallen warriors from Sierra High School honored

WHITTIER - More than 3 1/2 decades have passed since nine young alumni of the former Sierra High School sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War and one went missing in action.

But memories of them live on strongly at the campus and in the community.

More than 30 people took part in a remembrance Saturday in front of the campus's permanent memorial to Sierra High School's fallen warriors, donated by the class of 1969 and first dedicated in 1970, as the war in Vietnam continued to rage.

The monument displays plaques with the names of the nine soldiers killed in action and sits in front of the school administration office. It has been recognized as a federal memorial.

Decorated Vietnam veteran Jim Pilkenton, who graduated from Sierra High School in 1966, said he drives by the memorial regularly.

"And I shed a tear or two. But each time, a little less pain comes out of my heart," he said.

Pilkenton, who received three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars during his combat
