Historical Book Getting Interest From Current, Former Residents

With about 650 books sold so far, “Martinsville and the Washington Valley” is being enjoyed both by residents of Martinsville itself and even those who moved away to as far as Hawaii.
“I think it’s great to have the history of the place,” said Martinsville resident Vicki Charles, who has lived in town since 1988. “This book is neat because it’s in pictures.”
The book, which came out Aug. 15 and was written by Patricia Whitacre, was featured in a special question and answer session at the Bridgewater Township Library Thursday as residents were invited to ask questions about how the book, which tells much of Martinsville's history through pictures, was made.
“It was a question and answer on how you write a book, how you get people to loan pictures and working with a publisher,” said Jane Gandolfe, Martinsville resident who worked with Whitacre to put the book together. “Pat described how we put it all together.”
A total of 1,100 books were printed through Arcadia Publishing, and about 100 of them were sent out of state to people who have since moved out of Martinsville, to places such as Hawaii, Washington, California, Arizona, Montana, Florida, the Carolinas, Boston and Maine.
