Legacy lives on in latest recruits to Rothwell dynasty

THERE are not too many equestrian families in Ireland that can boast winning three championship titles in one day, let alone at the biggest showcase of the year, the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show.
For the Rothwells, of Tinahely, Co Wicklow, though, winning such accolades as the Breeders' Championship, Coloured Riding Horse and In-Hand Filly titles on the Friday of this year's show yet again cemented their status as one of the most renowned families for sport horse breeding and production in Ireland.
However, that special day has since been tinged with sadness with the passing of the great Derek Rothwell, who died on September 9 last. He is survived by his wife Maria, and his superb horsemanship will live on through his sons Derry and Noel, and their children Sharon, Mary, Ronan and Philip.
Though he was unable to travel to the RDS in August for the first time in many years, Derek kept a close eye on the results throughout the week, and was thrilled when Derry, along with his wife Emily and daughters Sharon and Mary, landed the three championships in one day.
